Caravan Park in Skegness
A recent commercial Solar PV project in Skegness shows how effective battery storage (BESS) and repowering can be. We upgraded the Solar PV system serving a large holiday park with 300 caravans.
Using the site’s 555-watt panels, our engineers created a purpose-built inverter house to improve the way the system delivered power across the park.
The original 20kW inverter was housed there and, using the same framework, we installed an additional 20kW inverter.
One of the main challenges was that the mains supply was 300 metres away from the inverter house.
To overcome this, we connected a hybrid inverter alongside the battery storage we installed, creating a more flexible and responsive system.
Each inverter provides 20kW of power, with a further 10kW available from the battery. Combined, the system can meet up to 50kW of demand from the site.
The result is a reactive system that prioritises the caravan park’s demand first, while maintaining the battery as a reliable back-up supply.
On a bright day, if the site requires 50kW and both inverters are producing, the system can draw what it needs to meet demand while also keeping the battery charged.
By using battery storage in this way, the site can significantly reduce the power it takes from the National Grid and may still have surplus energy available to sell.
