Bigger Isn’t Always Better: Getting Commercial Solar & Battery Storage Right
When it comes to commercial solar and battery storage, it’s easy to assume that bigger automatically means better.
More solar. More batteries. More storage.
But at HIT Energy Services, that isn’t how we approach energy projects.
Our starting point is simple:
What will deliver the best result for the customer?
Start With the Data
Before recommending additional solar or battery storage, we first look at how the site actually uses energy.
Through HIT Energy Guard, we can analyse historic consumption, existing solar performance, grid import and export, weather data and electricity tariffs.
This allows us to understand what is really happening behind the meter before designing the next stage of the system.
Because the largest battery isn’t necessarily the battery that provides the best return.
Design Solar and Storage as One System
One of the biggest opportunities we see with modern commercial energy systems is the move towards integrated hybrid solutions.
Rather than treating solar PV and battery storage as completely separate installations, we can design them to work together from the outset.
Solar generation, hybrid inverters, battery storage, monitoring and intelligent control become part of one energy system.
This can simplify the installation, reduce unnecessary infrastructure and, importantly, create a much clearer route for future expansion.
Install What You Need – Then Expand
Modern commercial battery systems are increasingly modular.
We believe that should be used to the customer’s advantage.
Instead of automatically installing the maximum possible battery capacity from day one, we can install an appropriately sized system, monitor its real-world performance and expand the storage later when the data demonstrates a financial case for doing so.
That means capital is being invested where it produces the greatest benefit.
A Smarter Battery Works Harder
Battery capacity is only part of the equation.
How the battery is controlled can be just as important.
HIT Energy Guard is evolving from the solar monitoring platform we’ve developed and refined over many years into a much broader intelligent energy management system.
By combining historic site performance with weather forecasting, expected solar generation, site demand and electricity tariffs, we can determine when batteries should charge and discharge.
If strong solar generation is expected, battery capacity can be reserved to capture that energy.
If solar conditions are poor, charging from the grid during lower-cost periods may provide the better result.
The objective isn’t simply to fill a battery.
It’s to use every available unit of storage intelligently.
Built From Real Solar Experience
HIT Energy Guard wasn’t created because battery storage suddenly became popular.
It grew from our experience maintaining and monitoring commercial solar assets and wanting better visibility of how those systems were actually performing.
Over the years, that has given us something extremely valuable: real-world experience of renewable energy assets and the data behind them.
We’re now applying that knowledge to the next generation of commercial energy systems.
“Our job isn’t to sell the customer the biggest battery we can fit. It’s to engineer the system that gives them the best return. If more storage makes financial sense later, we can add it.”
— Simon Hopkins, HIT Energy Services
For us, the future isn’t simply solar or battery storage.
It’s solar, storage, monitoring and intelligent control working together.
Because bigger isn’t always better. Better engineered is better.
